Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup Inflection AI, co-founded by Mustafa Suleyman of DeepMind and LinkedIn co-founder Reed Hoffman, has announced a formidable $1.3 billion funding round. This hefty investment propels the company's valuation to an impressive $4 billion, marking a notable milestone in the AI landscape.

The funding round, led by tech giants Microsoft and Nvidia, included high-profile participants such as Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt, and Reed Hoffman himself. It's worth noting that Nvidia, along with service provider CoreWeave, collaborated with Inflection AI on the development of Inflection’s current H100 cluster and on the fine-tuning of models for a record-setting MLPerf test.

Inflection AI is reportedly working with Nvidia and CoreWeave on the installation of an immense GPU cluster consisting of 22,000 H100s. If successful, this will represent the largest GPU cluster for AI applications globally, surpassing even Meta's announced 16,000 GPU cluster.

However, the surge in investor interest in powerful Large Language Models (LLMs) for personalized chatbot creation is raising concerns about a potential AI bubble. Nic Carter, a general partner at Castle Island Ventures, suggested that "AI is making the crypto bubble look like child's play."

Having launched only a year ago, Inflection AI turned heads by securing $225 million in initial funding with its ambitious plan to use AI to generate language at near-human-level performance. Despite seeking additional funding before releasing a product, the company promptly launched "Pi", a chatbot designed to be "empathetic, useful, and safe," offering a more personal and emotionally intelligent approach to interaction than rivals like OpenAI’s GPT-4, Microsoft’s Bing, or Google’s Bard.

In another significant move, Inflection recently announced its new LLM, Inflection-1, set to power Pi, which reportedly outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-3.5.
